"... the land of the free, and the home of the brave"

Let us all remember what Independence Day is actually about and those who are responsible for our celebrations.
Memorial Day 2009 (Indianapolis - 25 May 2009) Accompanied Murat Highlander bagpipes and drums, the Indiana Society Color Guard participated in the annual Memorial Day commemorations in Washington Park East Cemetery. Pictured is Major General R. Martin Umbarger, presenting a wreath at the Indiana National Guard Memorial. Also present were Indianapolis Mayor, Greg Ballard and six Indiana Purple Heart recipients, recently returned from operations in Iraq.
Bowman Grave (Vincennes – 23 May 2009) During the 35th anniversary of the Northwest Territory Alliance’s Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous the Indiana and Kentucky Societies conducted a grave rededication for Major Joseph Bowman, second in command under Colonel George Rogers Clark, during the capture of Fort Sackville (now Vincennes, Indiana) from the British. American Legion Post 34 from Lawrenceburg, KY and Vincennes' VFW Post 1157 participated, along with several ladies from the Indiana DAR.
2009_Mtg (Indianapolis - 18 April 2009) The Indiana Society elected officers and recognized several compatriots for their contributions. Stuart Hart and James Arnold received Patriot Medals for "long, faithful and outstanding service" to the Indiana Society. Fifty Indiana Service Medals were presented to members for three or more years service to their respective chapters and the Society. Sadly, several compatriots passed away during this previous year. The Color Guard and Chaplain Donald Counts conducted a memorial service on the lawn of the Propylaeum Mansion.
LaBalme 2008 (Near Columbia City - 1 November 2008) More than 60 people attended a commemoration near the Eel River site of the 5 November 1780 defeat of Col. Augustin de La Balme by Miami Chief Little Turtle. Members of the INSSAR Color Guard posted colors. The Fremont American Legion Honor Guard rendered a rifle salute followed by "Taps." The Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Children of the American Revolution (CAR) also participated in this annual event, hosted by the Anthony Halberstadt Chapter SAR.
